All I know is dat the cricket has been great and I think it is the rivalry of the decade. Also I blame the ICC, with all due respects to Peter's opinion:

Kumble did a lot more than "complain about the umpires". He branded Australia as cheats. He needed to apologise for that but he didn't.

By the way, the Hogg & Harbhajan reports were hardly equivalent and Hogg was only reported in retaliation. Again, it was a reaction that wasn't warranted.

Anyway it's sort of over ... for the time being.

Ray,

Do you really believe that Ponting would have let this go if Kumble hadn't complained about the umpires?

I don't think so. Ponting wanted Harbhajan out.

And Kumble as a goodwill gesture even removed the Hogg "bastard" charge back, despite Hogg admitting he said it.

If Ponting had returned the gesture by removing the "monkey" charge, it would have closed the whole matter and we could all have just enjoyed the cricket.

Oh no, please don't quote 'the canemaster', he's ... well he's just weird. I couldn't be bothered reading the whole diatribe. If he couldn't say it in about one tenth of the words then it wasn't worth saying.

In my opinion, this 'fracas' was started by Indian captain Anil Kumble when he (emotionally) over-reacted to the 2nd test loss and branded Australia as "not playing in the spirit of the game".

All that followed was bullshit, including the Harbhajan matter, which would have 'gone away' if India hadn't acted with such sour grapes over a few umpiring decisions. It's as simple as that and Roebuck is just making a meal (and a living) out of blowing it up and rambling on piously, like he always does.

Cheers mate.
