The Truth and Beauty of Darwinism
By Murtaza Hameer

“When I view all beings not as special creations, but as the lineal descendants of some few beings which lived long before the first bed of the Cambrian [geological] system was deposited, they seem to me to become ennobled.”

CHARLES DARWIN
The Origin of Species, Chapter XV

Darwinian evolution is still called a “theory” when in reality it is not a theory but a fact. Darwinian evolution is a fact because it is supported by fossil and molecular evidences enough to show that it is happening.

A simple example is that of the fossils of Sahelanthropus (as old as 7 million years) gradually branching off in to Orrorin, and then to Ardipithecus —> Australopithecus anamensis —> Australopithecus afarensis —> Homo habilis —> Homo erectus —> Homo sapiens (Thats us!). These are objective fossil findings and yet sadly Darwinian evolution is a labelled a “theory”, even in standard biology textbooks!

Even better than fossil evidences are molecular evidences. Almost all of life is made of the same stuff: DNA (or else RNA) written in the code of the bases A T C G. DNA studies have shown that our DNA and the DNA of chimpanzees is 99.6 percent same! We are closer cousins with the chimpanzees than the latter are to the gibbons, siamangs, orangutans, and other apes!

There is simply no way of explaining the above amazing findings other than by the concept of Darwinian evolution. Therefore, evolution cannot be a theory. It is a fact and rightly so. It is time to stop calling Darwinian evolution a theory. Its a fact just as gravity is a fact.

Even just anatomy, physiology and behaviour studies of chimpanzees have shown how exacly like us they are. The differences are not of kind but only of degree which is what evolution is all about.

It is no wonder that when Charles Darwin and Alfred Russell Wallace put forth natural selection, T.H. Huxley replied, “How stupid of me not think of that!” and the wife of the Bishop of Worcester said “Descended from the apes! My dear, let us hope that it is not true, but if it is, let us pray that it will not become generally known” since it was so obvious; and I don’t blame Richard Dawkins when he said , “Only a fool will deny Darwinism” because it is just so damn obvious and supported by evidence.

No other philosophy, school of thought, or religion explains how life came about. They do not even make a successful attempt. Its either stories from scriptures which have to be taken on faith and/or we are told of “God” being the creator which offers no explanation at all. It only satisfies our emotions. Our need to create a God to explain life is our human weakness of anthropocentrism that makes us want there to be a God. An opiate of the masses!
