Blue-Ray beats HD DVD in the format war

Finally… after losing the VHS vs Betamax format war to Matsushita in the 70s, Sony has bounced back to win the high definition DVD war with Toshiba. Sony learned from its earlier mistake of ignoring “content” for “technology”. Everyone knows that Betamax was a better video tape format than VHS. But VHS got the nod of Hollywood! And once content flood the markets, VHS sales just sizzled. (It also got a boost from the porn industry!).

This time, Sony did the right deals with Hollywood and the last nail on HD-DVD was Time Warner going ahead with Blue Ray, leading to Wal-Mart dumping HD-DVD in favour fo Blue-ray discs in its stores. While “Content” was king in the 80s, the late 90s brought in the era of “Distribution”. You can’t sell what you can’t distribute, and consumers can’t buy what they can’t get! Its as simple as that. And when the earth’s largest retail store, Wal-Mart decides to stock only Blue-Ray, then Toshiba must wind up HD DVD asap!

Anyways, it’s good for consumers that one format has one, as it has saved billions of dollars of economic waste in stocking two formats. Soon all Laptops, XBOs, Wiis, Playstations, DVD pplayers can all have one format.
