iAd demo (Posted 12 April 2010):

Steve Jobs & Apple have completely turned mobile advertising upside down with the launch of Apple iAds. These have more impact than TV, look and sound better than TV, have more interaction and engagement. Very intuitive & consumer friendly. This is what ADS should be like. Not stupid boring text links or 15 secs interruption.

They are also App Developer friendly (users don’t have to leave the App if they browse the ad).
Apple says they will sell the ads and share 60% revenue with App Developers.

Overnight, Apple has made Google/Admob obsolete in the mobile space. The fact that iPhone 4 also has the word “Google” removed and replaced by the word “search”, clearly means Apple/Jobs don’t even want Google in the Apple iUniverse. As Jobs said, iPhone users search for Apps not search the web (as they do in desktops). In the battle for Mobile space between Google vs Apple, the clear winner is Apple.

The Immortals of Meluha: India’s first Video Promo for a Fiction Novel

UPDATE – 11 July 2011:  According to Outlook Magazine, within a week of launch, The Immortals of Meluha hit the bestseller charts and within four months, it sold 45,000 copies! Last month, the total sales touched an astounding 125,000 copies (and these are only the legal sales… there are thousands of pirated copies being sold in the streets as well).

These are mind-boggling stats for English fiction sales of the Action genre in India, that too by a débutante author.

Crosswords Book Launch saw 128 books sold the very day, a record for a single bookstore launch. You can now buy the book online here (Free Shipping for India):

It was selling more than 600 copies a week at Crosswords alone. Probably 1000+ a week if we include Landmark.

For those curious about what “Meluha” means, here’s some light on the region: Indus Valley Civilization & Mehluha

India’s first Video Promo for a Fiction Novel

An amazing new Indian thriller “The Immortals of Meluha” written by Amish Tripathi has used a Video Trailer as a promotion tool which is quite a first in India. Videos are usually the reserve of movies. A Fiction novel? Never seen a video promo for it.  Watch the trailer below:

The background music has been composed by Taufiq Qureshi who is none other than the son of maestro Ustad Allahrakha & brother of tabla wizard Ustad Zakir Hussain!

Those who can’t wait for the book to come in stores, can get a sneak peak here: Chapter 1 download

You can check out reviews here: and at

I find it is a sign that Indian writing in English in the thriller/action genre is being accepted by the mainstream. Salman Rushdie, V.S.Naipaul, Vikram Seth, Jhumpa Lahiri and now Aravind Adiga wrote a different kind of fiction. Chetan Bhagat and Shobaa De were pretty successful commercially in India too, but again, no one wrote a successful action thriller. If the preview is anything to go by, this could be India’s first bestselling action trilogy. “The Immortals of Meluha”, the first part of what is known as The Shiva Trilogy will be available in bookstores like Landmark/Crosswords on Feb 28th.

About the book:

“The IMMORTALS OF MELUHA” is the first book in the Shiva trilogy.
It is set in 1900 BC, in what the modern Indians mistakenly call the Indus Valley Civilization. The inhabitants of that period called it the land of Meluha – a near perfect empire created many centuries earlier by Lord Ram, one of the greatest monarchs that ever lived.
